I've installed Tuxguitar on Ubuntu gutsy using synaptic.

The instruments appear and can be changed but the sound quality is really bad and the instruments sound badly wrong with a "steel string guitar" sounding like a very sick organ.

I've tried play back through a sound card and also a USB inteface device but the problem remains the same.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

I wondered if the inbuilt instruments might be bad so I downloaded a few other third party instrument. I am unsure how to install them. What is the procedure?

does anyone know what might cause the poor sound

I found the problem. To get good quality
goto the Menu Tools select settings
In the settings menu choose the Sound icon on the left hand side.

The midi sequencer needs to be TuxGuitar sequencer (mine wan't) and the Midi port gives the best authentic sound fro me when on Timidity port 0
